Guest blog post by Kay Rundle, Brook Cornwall Centre Director

We recently welcomed local MP Stephen Gilbert to visit the Brook Newquay service. Stephen has been really supportive of Brook Cornwall and has spoken up in Parliament about the importance of high quality sex and relationship education (SRE) so it was a great opportunity to show him around a service and talk more about the work we do with the young people of St Austell and Newquay.

After the requisite tour of Brook Newquay we talked to Stephen about the key issues in sexual health at the moment; namely, the current provision of sexual health services and the challenges in providing sexual health services that are easily accessible for all young people.

Stephen was really interested in how he can support Brook Cornwall and Brook nationally to improve SRE for young people. As Brook’s recent report Sex and Relationships Education fit for the 21st century; found nearly half of secondary school pupils say that SRE doesn’t cover what they really need to know about sex and clearly that needs to change.

So, thank you Stephen for taking time to visit the service and for being such a great supporter of Brook Cornwall.

Kay
